How to accessorise your designer rug with plants and botanical patterns

Prism Pastel Rectangle Rug by Sonya Winner

While perusing Pinterest we are always in awe of spaces where there is an abundance of plant life, spaces with botanical patterns! The indoor jungle trend brings a summery, bohemian feel to an interior and plants are known for purifying the air that we breathe and having a healing effect on our minds. The vibrant colours of our contemporary rugs are inspired by nature’s own offerings and we think dressing the space around a rug with plants is a fabulous way to enhance the impact of your interior.

The Health Benefits of Plants

Plants take the carbon dioxide from the air and release oxygen for us to breathe. They increase healing and are often used as complimentary medicine in patients post surgery. Studies have shown that plants lower blood pressure, pain, anxiety and fatigue and can hasten recovery time. They also help us work better by increasing concentration, memory and productivity. The same can be said of colours. So the impact of our nature inspired rugs combined with an abundance of plant life would be hugely positive to our health and wellbeing as well as looking fabulous!

Real or Fake Plants?

This is a matter of taste and practicality. There are some fantastic fake plants on the market now and they are a great way to avoid bugs, smells and shedding leaves. You must be choosey though, you need to touch and feel them. Don’t buy them online! Abigail Ahern’s shop in Islington has a top quality range.

Real life oxygen emitting plants are the ideal way forward, and if you don’t have green fingers, you can employ a company to change and look after your plants on a weekly basis. They will also help you choose the right plants for the light and temperature in your rooms. Patch Plants is possibly the most well known plant delivery service but there are lots of others, we have been inspired by Bloombox Club which was created by Dr of Psychology Katie Cooper.

Our contemporary rugs often live in modern homes with an abundance of glass and light. These rooms are wonderful for building an oasis of succulents and palms. Our Jellybean rug in lime looks particularly fabulous with a Bird of paradise plant or a Kentia palm.

Plant Prints on Fabric and Wallpaper

Plant prints on fabric immediately transport us to the Florida Keys, Miami and give a nod to 80’s glamour. That iconic palm print on sofas and chairs, walls or floors, with a pineapple cocktail shaker and a Cosmopolitan! How fabulous! The range of wallpapers and cushions with a palm print are abundant even now. The Designers Guild is a great place to start with a huge range of plant inspired wallpapers and fabrics. And we adore the range of colourful and unusual designs by Manuel Canovas Paris.

However if that’s not your vibe, there are more subtle botanical print options now and the effect is still as luxurious and decadent. Fabrics by Romo and especially this armchair in ‘Pleasure Gardens Velvet’ are particularly elegant.

Our Echoes of Light Green rug looks fabulous in an interior filled with plants and our After Albers rug was originally inspired by Sonya’s own love of Cornflowers which we have growing at the entrance to our Hampstead Heath studio. Our Jellybean Rug in Coconut brings a sense of calm and peace to an interior filled with muted botanical prints and dried flowers.

Whatever your interior style, dressing your space with even just one plant can bring all kinds of benefits. Don’t ‘leaf’ it too late – go green!
