London is a place full of wonder, creativity and community, so we wanted to share a few of our favourite locations which are more uncommon than the average blog post! Whether you’re a lover of art, architecture, independent shops, or simply discovering something new, these spots are sure to add an extra layer of magic to your London adventures.
The Tate Modern is a popular art gallery located in the heart of London, and houses the United Kingdom’s national collection of international contemporary art.
While most people are aware of the Tate and its prestigious gallery, the lesser-known activity is ‘Tate Modern Lates’, which are free monthly events in the evening at the gallery.
At the events they offer a mix of art, music, film, workshops and more. It’s a great people to meet more arty people in London or to learn more about featured artists! They have previously had talks about ‘Expressionists’, ‘Sonic Art’, ‘South London’s Creative Communities’ and so on…
They are typically held on the last Friday of each month (except December) but you can find out when the next one is through the Tate website here.
When its lovely and warm during the summer months, Hampstead Heath offer beautiful natural swimming ponds, open to the public. There is one mixed pond for everyone near Hampstead Heath overground, as well as one female only pond and one male only pond which are located on the Highgate side of the heath.
The lovely natural ponds and surrounding greenery set the scene for a completely different swimming experience than the average chlorinated swimming pool. After your swim you can pick the perfect sunny spot and listen to the birds or have a picnic with your family.
To book, go to the City of London website here.
For lunch, head down to Panzer’s Deli for their iconic smoked salmon bagel or try out their brand-new pizzeria. They offer a sit-down breakfast, lunch and all-day menu along with their high-quality, kosher friendly products sold in store.
Panzer’s was established during the final years of World War II by Panzer family members, Jewish immigrants who sought to bring the flavours of continental Europe to London. Today, it continues to serve loyal locals and destination shoppers alike, making Panzer’s a top destination to cross off your list.
For any history and/or architect lovers, check out the Isokon Gallery.
The Isokon Gallery is a permanent exhibition telling the remarkable story of the Isokon building, the pioneering modern apartment block opened in 1934 as an experiment in new ways of urban living.
To celebrate the 90th anniversary of the opening of Isokon Flats they are exhibiting “Through a Bauhaus Lens: Edith Tudor-Hart and Isokon”, an exhibition of previously unseen 1933–4 photographs by the Viennese, Bauhaus-trained photographer Edith Tudor-Hart.
The exhibition is running from March 2024 until November 2025.
Sonya Winner Rug Studio and Showroom is a small, contemporary design shop located just a stone’s throw away from Hampstead Heath and 20 minutes away from the Isokon Gallery.
Founded by designer Sonya Winner, this unique space invites you into their world of colour to explore their range of irregular rugs, runners and wall hangings, which are sure to transform your home!
Recently featured in Aegean Airlines Magazine in their London Beat article, Sonya Winner’s studio is recognised as one of the top places to visit in London, here’s what they had to say:
“In contrast to traditional designers who use repetitive patterns, Winner creates asymmetrical, layered rugs with a sense of dynamic movement, resembling contemporary art installations laid on the floor…”
“…Winner’s designs are inspired by art, nature and her vacations on the Ionian Islands, as seen in “The Ionian Collection”, which draws inspiration from the landscapes of Paxos and Ithaca.”
