Bedroom Rugs: Top Things to Consider

Bedroom Rugs - After the Rainbow

A Bedroom rug can act as a transformative piece for your bedroom, whether you’re creating a modern, transitional or traditional interior. In terms of mood and aesthetics, there is one main thing for you to decide at the start of your bedroom decorating process: you want this room to be a sanctuary of peace and relaxation, or a passionate, exciting space. Once this has been decided, there is a series of practical decisions for you to make. Whatever your personality demands in terms of functionality and aesthetics, from modern bedroom rugs in abstract patterns, to designer rugs with a refined feel, we recommend that you either take the rug as a starting point and build your bedroom design around it, or use the rug as the finishing touch to your design scheme. We have laid out a bedroom rugs guide to help you consider what is best suited to you!

Best size for a bedroom rug

If you have a large bedroom, and a double or king sized bed, it would be best to choose a large rug for bedroom. You can find a great rug for queen sized bed or rug size for king bedroom. Ideally the area rug bedroom would go under the bed and make a good sized border beyond, so that you can step out of bed and onto the thick luxurious pile of the rug. This means ideally a minimum of 24 inches/60cm either side of the bed. We recommend investing in a quality area rug for bedroom, because you will certainly feel the difference when you walk on it.

If having a large bedroom carpet half hidden under the bed seems like a waste, you can choose the more economical option of placing two small bedside rugs, or two bedroom runners, on either side of your bed. The varying pile heights and softness of 100% New Zealand wool in our new Magic Stepping Stones Runner and Rainbow Runner create the dream bedside runners. The thickness of the rug provides for the perfect soft first step out of bed in the morning!

For small and single bedrooms, you can try vibrant and geometric patterns to make the room appear bigger with rugs under beds, such as the vibrant shapes in our Rainbow Rug or the Prism Vibrant Rectangle.

Rugs to change the mood of a bedroom

Bedrooms are a place of comfort, of style and of passion. Area rug in bedroom can stylishly transform the mood of your bedroom. For a cool and tranquil feel, and especially if nature is generally your source of calm, use blue rugs and green rugs, in all their different varieties, including teal, navy, turquoise or lime green. These colours are famous for their soothing qualities and therefore a safe choice. Although, if you don’t feel like playing safe, but rather sophisticated, try a fusion of pastel colours. Particularly cool toned pastels like baby blue, lilac and mint have a beautifully calming effect.

If you want to bring a warmer and more sensual feel to your bedroom, use oranges, reds and purples. Or a graphic passionate piece like our Kiss Rugs – a bold design that oozes with passion and anticipation that you can feel as soon as you walk into the room. You can also explore with other rich tones of warm orange and deep purple in the Rothko-esque Deep Rug (pictured below).

Rugs to make your bedroom cosier

If you like the feel of fluffy bedroom area rug, or you want a touch of luxury to your bedroom, a Silk Rug is a perfect choice. The bedroom is one place you don’t have to worry about foot traffic, and so it is the ideal place to splash out and choose comfort and style first. Our Limited Edition Silk Jewel Rug is the queen of bedroom rugs. So much so it is inspired by the form of a cut gemstone! This would work beautifully as a centrepiece in a bedroom, under a dressing table, or surrounding a double bed.

For an extra level of cosiness, consider handmade rugs. There is a special beauty in owning an artisan made piece, hand crafted with the knowledge and care of hundreds of years of tradition. It is also very important (massively so for us!) to know that purchasing a rug means keeping alive traditional weaving communities, supporting the local crafts and improving their working conditions.

We also recommend using natural fibre rugs, such as wool, or silk. Out of all the rooms, the bedroom is the one that requires it the most, as natural fibre offers the softest underfoot feeling, while also being kind to the human skin.

Kids bedroom rugs

Rugs for kids rooms are becoming increasingly popular among the design and children psychology savvy. Many research projects have found that children are stimulated to learn by bright and vibrant colours. Adding a vibrant rug to a child’s bedroom is an easy and effective way of achieving this stimulation. Our Bubbles Rug has been particularly popular as a kids bedroom rug or a kids playroom rug. The vibrancy and layering of colour makes for an ideal piece that stimulates learning and interaction.

Rugs for a girl’s bedroom: To match a bold, active personality, try the After Matisse Rug or the Magic Stepping Stones Runner. Both pieces are an intricately coloured exhibition of energy and vitality. If however you’re taking a more subtly feminine approach in your decoration, try the delicate mix of pastels in the Prism Pastels Rug or the fine pink and aqua in the Jewel Sky Rose Rug.

Rugs for a boy’s bedroom: You can’t go wrong with the Bubbles Rug. It ties in green and blue with vibrant orange and purple to add a playful, yet stylish touch. What makes this piece ideal for a boy’s room is that it is both visually exciting and intellectually stimulating – the perfect mix for a developing mind and senses. If the Bubbles Rug seems too daring for you, try a more tamed, yet still exciting piece like the geometric Kaleidoscope Rug or the After Albers Cornflower with its playful layering of blues and greens.
