Colour designs: one master’s insights into another
So excited to be invited to a talk by one of our favourite artists, Bridget Riley, all about another great inspiration, Matisse!
This distinguished pioneer of British Op Art gave a talk about Matisse’s cut-outs at Tate Modern. As a fellow artist, her insights about Matisse’s use of colour and form in his Snail and other works were inspirational. She talked about the significance of his placement of blocks of colour, as well as the spaces in between his forms, and how he had informed her own work. As we are huge fans of both Riley and Matisse, it was a privilege to be there!
Riley began to develop her signature style in the early 60s, experimenting first with black and
white. Later she introduced colour and has produced wonderful compositions in a bright array
ever since. An exhibition of her works, Bridget Riley: The Stripe Paintings 1961-2014 is on at David Zwirner in London until 25 July, catch it if you can!
Matisse: The Cut-Outs exhibition is still on at Tate Modern until September. It opens at MOMA in NY in October – don’t miss it!
