How to Fix Indentations in your Carpet

Ice

Begin by placing ice cubes on the dented areas of your modern rug. As the ice melts, the rugs fibres will soak up the water and start to rise. Use a sponge or paper towel to dry the excess water and then gently massage the fibres with your finger or a narrow object. If the dent is still slightly visible, repeat the process until it returns to its natural state.

Steam

Perhaps one of our most recommended options for fixing dents is steaming! This can be done one of two ways, either via a hot tea towel or by machine steamer. If you have a clothes steamer or steam iron in your home, hover the device near the marked area on your luxury rug making sure the steam will come out directly onto the dent. It is also important that you leave several inches between the rug and the steam so that the heat does not burn the fibres and damage your luxury rug even more. The steams moisture will immediately help the fibres regain their elasticity, returning the surface to its soft, bouncy state. After steaming, you may need to carefully fluff up the material using your fingers, but make sure your wool rug has cooled before doing so.

If you don’t have a steam iron or clothes steamer, you can try using a similar technique with a tea towel and classic iron. Dampen the towel using warm water and wring out the excess before placing it on top of the area you are trying to lift. Set the iron to low heat and press it onto the tea towel. The moisture combined with the heat should create the same effect as the steamer technique mentioned above. Always make sure your wool rug is cooled before assessing the results.

Fork

If all else fails or you do not have any of the items recommended above, one utensil everyone should have in their home is a fork! Take your folks pointed end and very gently use it to fold back the pressed fibres. Be careful and take your time with this technique as you do not want to damage the yarns of your wool rug or rug backing further. After a while of massaging the surface with the forks thin edge, the fibres should start to regain their natural form and level out.

How to Prevent Dents in your Modern Rug

Now you’ve learnt how to fix dents in your rug, let’s learn what preventative steps you can take moving forward to minimize dents occurring again or in the first place. These rug care tips can also make dents easier to fix if this damage occurs again.

Furniture Pads

A key protective accessory you can use to deter dents is furniture pads. These pads are small discs that are placed underneath the feet of heavy furniture to distribute weight evenly along the carpets surface and minimize pressure on specific areas. Using light furniture pads made from felt or rubber are the best material to use because they provide extra cushioning without damaging the rug’s fibres.

Rug Underlay

For even more cushioning, adding an underlay to your luxury rug can give it more protection against compression marks. The soft underlay creates a barrier between your area rug and the surface of the hard floor. A rug underlay also helps disperse pressure across your contemporary rug, therefore lessening the transfer of indentations from your furniture.

Rotate your Furniture Regularly

A completely free way to lessen the damage against heavy furniture is to rotate it regularly. Occasionally lifting your tables or seating areas can help distribute the weight across your area rug and cause less damage to direct areas. However, after moving your furniture you may find that you will have to use one of the rug care methods mentioned above to properly return the fibres to their completely natural state if they have been in that position for a long period of time.

Rotate your Modern Rug Regularly

If it’s not possible to rotate your furniture try rotating your area rug instead. The regular movement results in the same effect without the stress of curating your furniture repeatedly and avoid heavy lifting. The regular movement of your rug placement may also help with sun bleaching if your space is in a lot of direct sunlight, this therefore allows your modern rug to age evenly over time.

Why is Quality Important?

Your contemporary rug deserves to shine as a testament to your home’s elegance, but of course none of these preventative measures are beneficial unless you have a good quality rug to begin with. Investing in high quality, like our 100% New Zealand wool rugs, serve you multiple long-time advantages that pay you back in the long run. For example, New Zealand wool is renowned for its exceptional durability, with its fibres containing natural elasticity. This allows them to bounce back from pressure and maintain their shape over time. Therefore, when dealing with furniture dents and compressions, our luxury rugs are able to withstand heavy furniture without breaking or ripping over time and can spring back using one of our top tips mentioned above.

When considering such a key piece of your home interior, it’s important to think about these aspects and take them into consideration. You want the elements within your home to be able to withstand the ever-moving life of your family and everyday life, so when looking for a reliable modern rug make sure to research reputable rug designers and the rug should look after itself!
