New Modern Rug Launch 2025: Sedona Collection

We are thrilled to unveil our New Modern Rug Launch: Sedona Collection. The latest addition to our Canyon Collection, this stunning series celebrates the essence of natural landscapes, capturing the breathtaking hues and textures of Arizona’s canyons in two exceptional designs: the Sedona Irregular Rug and the Sedona Square Rug.

Kevin McClellan and Sonya Winner

SWS x Kevin McClellan Collaboration

In 2023, Sonya Winner reached out to American architect Kevin McClellan, drawn to his masterful use of colour, shape, and his innovative AI-generated artworks. Their shared appreciation for the dramatic landscapes of the Sedona canyons provided an additional foundation for their creative synergy. After a year of thoughtful dialogue and development, we are proud to present a contemporary rug collection that embodies their shared vision of Sedona and modern design, seamlessly blending artistic innovation with natural inspiration.

In developing the concept, McClennan’s architectural background introduced a novel perspective on form and space, allowing for an inventive interplay between colour and line that echoes the natural landscapes of Sedona. Refined by Sonya, her signature use of colour transparency, and affinity for irregular, rhythmic compositions and organic shapes which are explored through the intricate artistry of weaving, combine in a seamless fusion to create a dynamic capsule collection that translates the serene and untamed beauty of Sedona into a rich, bold tapestry of colour and form.

Finding Inspiration in the Sedona Canyons

Inspired by the breathtaking canyons of Sedona, Arizona—an area celebrated for its striking rock formations, iconic vistas, and rich natural palette—the capsule collection introduces two remarkable new rugs. These designs are defined by their sculptural, flowing layers of vibrant and intricately nuanced colours, echoing the region’s dynamic landscape.

The Arizona terrain has been a lasting source of inspiration for artist and colourist Sonya Winner, who first explored the area in 2021 with her acclaimed Antelope Canyon collection. Often seeking inspiration from the natural world, Sonya inspects organic forms, textures, and colours found in natural landscapes, transforming these elements into her signature vibrant and unique rug designs.

The Colours of Sedona

The Sedona canyons are renowned for their stunning, vibrant colours, which result from unique geological formations, mineral deposits, and the desert environment. The most iconic colour is red, as Sedona is famous for its striking red sandstone formations. These red rocks are the result of iron oxide (rust) that has seeped into the rock layers, giving the landscape its reddish hue. The deeper the red, the higher the iron content in the rocks. Alongside the red rocks, you’ll also find vibrant orange and golden hues, especially in the early morning or late afternoon when the sun casts a warm, golden light over the canyon walls.

The canyons also feature softer shades of purple and pink, particularly in areas where the rock layers change. These hues are most noticeable during the early morning or twilight light. In contrast to these deeper colours, you can find white sandstone formations in certain areas, which add soft pale rings on top of the fiery orange surface.

The Shapes of Sedona

The shapes of the Sedona canyons are as captivating as their colors, showcasing diverse and visually striking formations. Canyon walls are characterized by jagged cliffs and steep, towering rock formations rising abruptly from the valley floors. These cliffs are made of sedimentary rock, shaped over millions of years by erosion, wind, and water. Iconic Sedona formations include buttes, steep-sided hills with flat tops that stand alone in the canyon floor. Mesas are similar to buttes but larger, with broad, flat tops and steep sides resembling flat-topped mountains. These formations contrast sharply with the surrounding gently sloping terrain in the region’s desert landscape. The Sedona Irregular Rug mimics canyon shapes with its irregular, curvy outline and wild, organic forms. No two pieces of the Sedona Irregular Rug are identical, inspired by nature’s flow and influence.

The Sedona Irregular Rug

Sedona Irregular Rug is a truly unique, contemporary masterpiece. Its irregular outline flows in an organic, curving form, beautifully echoing the natural shapes of the canyon. The design follows this fluidity, each colour moves and turns against one another, reflecting the coloured sediments you see within the canyon. Almost like a heat map, colours shift from soft, light tones reminiscent of white sandstone to rich reds and browns that capture the essence of the canyon’s iconic red rocks.

This modern rug is for anyone who has a love for contemporary design and who seeks a statement piece reflecting the beauty of natural landscapes into their living space.

The Sedona Square Rug by Sonya Winner and Kevin McClellan

The Sedona Square Rug

Sedona Square Rug features a squared outline softened by rounded edges, creating harmony with the flowing curves within its design. This piece features deep reds, oranges, and yellows, like the Sedona Irregular Rug, with added blue tones. It is perfect for anyone who prefers a cooler-toned rug with a balanced and vibrant palette. Unlike the Sedona Irregular Rug, this design includes circular motifs symbolizing towering rock formations called buttes. These circular shapes represent the stunning view of buttes from above, emphasizing their natural beauty and striking formation.
