The Design

The Lichen rug collection is a result of the creative collaboration between Sonya Winner and KLC School of Design alumna Alice Hislop. Taking inspiration from the intricate patterns and natural hues of Lichens, the collection represents an extraordinary level of weaving complexity, resulting in an exquisite and unique rug design that feels as organic and harmonious as nature’s most fascinating creations.

Alice’s entry in Sonya Winner’s KLC design competition resonated with the profound thought processes and innovative approaches that the London-based studio values. With the concept of ‘Structural Fluidity’, the design explores the intricate interplay of patterns, movements, and colours, exuding a sense of serenity and fluidity.

Upon selecting Alice as the winner, Sonya and her team of creatives worked to bring Alice’s vision to life, emphasizing the curvaceous, rhythmic, and flowing designs inspired by Lichens’ gem-like colours and delicate shapes. Sonya personally travelled to India to collaborate with artisanal weavers, refining the final pile levels to create a rug design that delights the senses with its varied pile heights and elegant curves. The flowing, gentle forms of the Lichen rug collection are created to add a sense of rhythm and softness to any space, providing a contrast to the hard surfaces found in modern interiors.

Produced by hand by GoodWeave weavers, the skilled craftspeople work sustainably, utilizing solar energy, onsite yarn dyeing using local wood, sun-drying yarn, and recycling excess dyed wool. Most importantly, the production process is audited by @Goodweave, ensuring safe working conditions and fair wages, reflecting Sonya’s commitment to supporting the industry for future generations.

Lichen is available in 3 colourways, a bold pairing of blues with a pop of bright warming orange; a beautifully subtle colourway merging warm and cool greys with a highlight of creamy white; and an exploration of malachite inspired greens which vary in intensity and tone. This Lichen rug collection is available in 4 sizes and can be made in bespoke colours and sizes upon request. It is available exclusively from sonyawinner.com and via the Sonya Winner London showroom.
